LIMINAL LABS' CLEANUP PLAN INCLUDES; * description of pre-playa trash-conscious preparation * description of how liminal labs keep tidy on the playa * description of how liminal labs clean up after * point person responsibilities LIMINAL LABS (since 1999, known as liminal lounge, tengu teahaus, meatcamp, dead media cargo cult, and trailer court militia) have always taken 'leave no trace' to heart. with each year, we become more efficient. this year: PRE-PLAYA PLANNING * we require that all campmates read and pledge to follow the survival guide and our Leave No Trace plan. * we purchase consumables that are reusable or recyclable whenever possible. * we remove all packaging from foodstuffs and other camp consumables prior to playa arrival. * we are conscientious about bringing as little glass as possible. * we bring as much water in 55-gallon containers as possible (a minimum of five, this year) * we plan meals that result in as little garbage or left-overs as possible. * we bring reusable utensils and cookware. * we pack plenty of industrial-strength plastic bags and sealed containers for icky trash and grey water. * we bring no feathers, tinsel, sequins, or broken glass. * we pack brooms, gloves, sponges, shovel, rake, ropes, vice grips, sledge hammers, magnets (for picking up any metal bits), cheesecloth (for straining used water). * we bring directions to approved recycling and landfill for the ride home. ON THE PLAYA * when constructing camp, we tie down, weigh down, and put away anything that might have any tendency to blow away or down, even in light winds. * we clearly label and weigh down our various trash collection bags and bins: aluminum is collected in heavy plastic bags and taken to recycling camp or brought back with us for recycling. paper and appropriate burnables are collected in covered boxes and regularly taken to burn platforms. recyclable plastic is collected in heavy plastic bags and taken back to the city with us. icky garbage and ashes from our bbq grill are sealed in lidded bins and dumped at the Reno Transfer Station. we bring containers to haul out and grey water. we turn whatever garbage we can into art. * daily we sweep our camp and immediate environs for any garbage. * we take responsibility for any trash left by camp guests. * daily we check that anything that could possibly blow away is weighted down properly. * daily we check beneath vehicles to make sure that none are leaking any fluids. we would put collection tarps beneath if that were to happen. * we build our shower so that the water is captured and has plenty of surface area to evaporate. * we never pour grey or black water on the playa. * we never put anything but single-ply toilet paper in the public toilets * all smokers carry their own personal, lidded ashtrays with them at all times. * we encourage friends, new and old, to use our trash containers when visiting. * we always, always, always, pick up any garbage that we find at any time, any place, on the playa. * we avoid camp art (digging of holes, fires, paint) projects that could leave a trace. FINAL CLEANUP * we allow plenty of time for careful dismantling of all camp structures. * we allow extra space when packing for the inevitable playa bloat. * we never attach items to our vehicles that could detach and blow away or be left behind. * we pack all garbage to go to appropriate landfill in closed heavy plastic bags or sealed containers. * once packed, we move all vehicles away from our camp and in a gridded formation, break up any dunes with sledge hammers and shovels, we walk the entire site with no more than 5 feet between us, picking up every single object and taking particular care to check that all rebar and tent stakes have been removed. * we help our neighbors in their de-MOOP efforts. * we each volunteer two hours, some with earth guardians or other desert preservation groups, to scour the playa beyond our camp for trash and help restore natural characteristics. POINT PERSON RESPONSIBILITIES * GARBAGE TZAR - every year, we assign one person the job of garbage tzar. responsibilities include pre-playa planning, purchase, and packing of all materials necessary for fulfilling our commitment to Leave No Trace (see above). on the playa, the GT oversees placement of all trash receptacles, training of new campmates, daily trash sweeps, and final cleanup on our last day. * WATER TZAR - every year, we assign one person the job of overseeing our drinking water, shower water, water evaporation, and containing and disposing of grey or black water. * KITCHEN TZAR - every year, we assign one person the job of overseeing all food planning, with emphasis on choosing foods and packaging that leave the least trace. our meal planning spreadsheets include exactly who is bringing what for which days, helping to ensure that there is no waste and that individuals are taking full responsibility for their part in the food planning and preparation. in addition, cleanup crews for each day are assigned and guided.
